Leonardo da Vinci

IMO : 8411592

Build : 1986 by IHC Smit, Kinderdijk, the Netherlands, nr ??

The Leonardo da Vinci, one of the vessels I’ve had the “honor” of working on. She is a Self-propelled Cutter Suction Dredger, basically she is just a gigantic drill with a big vacuum-cleaner coupled to it. With 2 oversized wingnuts as propellers and 2 coffee tables as rudders. And she is a beast.

When I first approached her on a little crewtender I was confused: I couldn’t make bow nor stern on her and it took me a while before I saw the whole picture. Basically: the part where the big poles are sticking up is the pointy bit, the official bow, the other side is the stern (duh!!). But when she is dredging she works herself aftwards….so you had 2 names for every side: sailing-bow = dredging-stern, sailing-stern = dredging forward, sailing starboard = dredging left and finally: sailing port = dredging right. Confusing, always and for everybody!
