Rocky Giant

IMO : 7221603

Build : 1972 by Ulstein M/V A/S, Ulsteinvik in Norway, nr 70 as Grete Nielsen

A stonedumper by profession, ugly by sight! She started life as normal coaster, happily transporting cargo from port to port but in 1978 she got scooped up by a large & ruthless dredging company. She immediately got converted into a DP-stonedumper, widened in 1981, converted again in 1991. The accommodation got extended and loads more done to her.

Almost nothing of her original design remained untouched in all those years.

But, looking on the bright side: she now went to places all over the world where she would never have gone if she remained a regular coaster.

I couldn’t find a picture of her as Grete Nielsen but I guess you can imagine how she looked like being a normal coaster.

And, to calm you down: she is scrapped now! A sorry sight gone from the seven seas.

Update (11-01-2010)

Wim Kosten from Maritimephoto.com had some pictures kicking around showing the former disguises of above vessel:

As Grete Nielsen, before the conversion-drama started…..just a neat little coaster.

And after the conversion, already as Rocky Giant but still without her stone-dumping stuff.

Thanks for sharing the pics Wim!
