Athos Matacena
IMO: 8949941
Build: 1970 by Merwede Shipyard – Hardinxveld Giessendam in The Netherlands, nr 598 as Prins Willem Alexander
In terms of the traditional Jamaican folk song “Banana Boat,” the reference is to workers loading freight onto general cargo vessels.
However, interpreting the term differently, it could be applied quite well to this ferry, which looks much like what else? A banana!
If only she was painted yellow, then she really could fit the moniker.
But, what do you know? She was a little closer in her previous guise as the Prins Willem Alexander, part of her was banana-colored at that time. Let’s hope that’s as close as she ever gets.
