Helix Producer I

IMO : 8420115

Build : 1986 by HDW Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH – Kiel in Germany, nr 211 as Karl Carstens (Ferry)

Last night I was browsing the web when I stumbled upon this strange & ugly  looking vessel and while I was scratching my head and going WTF? I also received an email from Alexander who had spotted the same thing and tipped me about it. The thing that caught my attention was the “double bridge”, see below picture.

See?? And besides the 2 bridges, is she ugly or what? So I went on a digital search to find more about her…..look at her current state :

This is how she looked before, how she was build in the first place :

Yup, a ferry….an ordinary ferry……and not a good looking one for that matter.

The conversion to her second state :

You’d wonder why they would have started a conversion of small vessel to a large offshore vessel like she became…..Wouldn’t it just be easier to start from scratch and do a newbuild? At least they would have had the chance of making her less ugly.

But then again: they had the same chance now and they didn’t use it. On most of the above pics the deck is still empty, that filled now as well with a spare oil refinery they had laying around……

Yup: totally beyond any help whatsoever.
