Halani-1
IMO : 7816379
Build : 1980 by Verolme Heusden – Heusden in the Netherlands, nr ?? as Molengat
This peculiar looking vessel is a high-tech DP3 offshore vessel…..yup, I wouldn’t have guessed it either. Also to be honest: she is still under construction so the end result may differ from the above image and be muuuuch better looking. But I very much doubt it.

As you may have noticed from the build-info this is not a newbuild, it’s a conversion of an (much) older existing vessel, a ferry to be exact. Please see below pic of her initial form.

Not the most prettiest ferry that has ever sailed the world but what on earth has she done to deserve the faith as shown on above and below pictures??

Here is a computer generated image of how she will be in the near future.
Yup…..she will be an Official Ugly Ship when she is ready.
Update (22-05-2010)
Last week I received an email from mr Ashok Bhambhani, the owner of the vessel above, obviously he wasn’t too happy about me calling his vessel ugly and he begged to differ. He states: “The idea and design is my own, I am not a mariner, but a service provide who grew from Shipchandler to vessel owner and with this I tried to raise the limits. That’s why my sentiments are attached to it.” To convince me of my wrong he send me some pictures of the vessel, please see below.

Unfortunately there is no picture of the bow yet….it might surface in the near future. Mr Bhambhani did his utmost best but I haven’t changed my mind yet….so we have a bit of a stand-off. I’ll leave it upto yourself personally to make up your own mind about this vessel.
BTW: later this year the vessel will be working in Angola, on charter to one of the big Oilcompanies over there.
More information about mr Ashok Bhambhani’s company: the Halani group can be found on their website.
The vessel looks alright , And if it is DP3 then it is good for the Molengat as she was just ordinary looking ferry
I have a sinking feeling about this 🙂
I proud of this vessel beacouse when she was ferry i was work in this vessel.
now she is DP3 now also work the same .
i proud of my self also i was the person there who was incharge the all steel installatin..
DEVENDRA MAN
IT IS NOT RIGHT TO DISGRACE OR TAKE DECISION ABOUT THIS VESSEL TILL ITS IN BUISNESS DONT GO ON ARCHITECTURE LOOKS SHE MIGHT AND WILL PERFORM THE BEST IAM LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF THIS VESSEL.
U might wanna check your Caps-Lock mate…….no need to shout.
THIS ONE THE GREAT LOOKING HI TECH DP3 WE WISH HER ALL THE BEST IN HER MAIDEN CHARTER TO ANGOLA AND IF GIVEN A CHANCE WILL PROVE OUR BEST TO DEDICATE MY PROFESSIONAL SERVICE FOR HALANI1, ONCE AGAIN BEST OF LUCK FROM THE TEAM OF GERIMALS.
and I repeat: Check your Caps-Lock!!!
ok buddy checking from all corners but still halani1 is numero uno and is a feather on the cap for halani shipping
Hey Gladson, easy on the dedication… you might be overdoing it ;). Let me see.. Painted accomodation decks -1, Benches in mess -1, location of liferafts (dont see them floating free) -10. Chinese steelwork sucks..not to demoralise, just stating whats visible.
Could have done a lot better, she might do ok in the DP aspect since she has VS drives. Best of luck with your adventures!
I have worked for this vessel while it was being constructed.
Each and every aspect has been touched, analysed and planned as per the requirement of its usage.
So it will be a revolution in the coming years.
As every new thing is first difficult to accept and praise so is the case with this vessel.
But pretty confident that the this vessel will create wonders and attain name and fame.
it would have been much easyer to keep using the ship as ferry….
i mean…from any ship you can make the halani1.
its not how they build the ugly ship…its about demolishing a complete ferry!
vessel is well built and navigator are much comfortable to handle. Although only two voith makes the operation smooth, It consist stern and bow thruster as well as azimuth thruster. I work onboard as 2nd.engineer and found all existing machinaries are in good working condition together with newly installed machinaries / equipment.
worst ship to work on, guys keep your herat at home when you come onboard
it was a good working ferry………….
Neeraj……………………I was with the captain while trials. You say very easy navigation. The worst captain was always fed up of navigating this ship. What do u have in ur VSP rooms. 2 big mooring winches, and not using even not commissioned
this ship was converted without any plan. unskilled workers. always wanted save some cents and after all day spending 1000 dollars again. poor. The owner may had good intensions, but to be honest it was never met the way he wants. because the decision maker at vessel were not technically sound. they wants the appearance………. not funcionally well. Mr. Owner dont make these mistakes ever.
this ship converted from ferry to MSV/DP3/Fi Fi 2 so on. she is very good maintaining the position, good speed (9 Kn) ,big control room, well maintained all machinery and machinery compartment, well equipped for 240 plus passenger. All existing machinery is in very good condition i am proud of that machinery, only there is no manual provided for new machinery these new equipment installed in China (China made).
Any way as per my opinion this Vessel is very good for all off shore operation.
Wat u know abt this vessel and u are keep on saying this vessel is ugly… u bloody u not even having a single vessel and ur are keep on saying others vessel are bad( ugly)….
What do you know about this vessel???
What do you know about me for saying I’m not allowed to express my opinion?
I start work on this vessel and like her much.During conversion I was also an engineer in-charge in this vessel.Very comfortable if maintain well.
God, it looks ugly. Practical, yes. Valuable, maybe. I just hope they keep her in the Yangtze Estuary or the rivers of Angola, that cargo deck is bound to be awash at the slightests of waves.
I also find the helicopter platform rather comical. You can’t land anything heavier than a light 2 person helicopter on that platform. Even if the platform could sustain the weight of something heavier, the mast is going to be in the way. As a pilot, I would never dare land on that thing.
The “ship” is so godawful, it reminds me about those self-made houseboats Africans/Chinese/etc live on the rivers…
Though have to agree with dinesh, the interior looks like you’re at some office on shore there rather on a ship.
By these pics the helideck is abow the bridge & away from the masts & antennas

Btw, here’s a GA plan:
http://www.vanderkamp.com/assets/img/upload/listings/Halani%201%20Specs%2010-08-2010.pdf
What I find hilarious on the side view is how the waterline divides this ship in to 2 completely different “ships” that don’t even harmonizing with each other.
I wonder if the underwater part of the bow provides enough buoyancy…
As a semi professional (Senior DPO / 2nd Officer) I must say that this conversion is not the worst I have seen. The intentions are good and they have managed to get very much out of what little is left of the ferry, a lot of the equipment is first class, like the K-Pos DP System, GMDSS and LSA. I am confident that the DP capabilities will be excellent. However, the design is terrible and the interiors are utter shite. A shame, considering the amount of money that must have gone into this project already. I wish the crew the best of luck.
Dear Mr.Seabart
Do you Know what’s the capability of this ship?
Do you know how many redundancy coped up upto now ?
Do you know what kind of jobs above surface and subsea this ship can do?
Are you qualified as Naval Architect or Marine Engineer or Navigator?
On Which Qualification you are commenting Some craft as ugly?
In world two people comment on others one who knows every thing or who doesn’t know anything
I thing you need to Consult some people who knows about sea and ship?
Dear mr Jeyasingh Solomon:
Yes, I have studied Naval Architecture, I have also studied on a Maritime University, I have my Certificate of Competence as Master unlimited & Chief Engineer. At the moment I’m working as a Master / Sr-DPO on a Multi-purpose Subsea Support vessel, I have more than 11.000 hrs DP-experience. So you might say that I have a litle bit of knowledge about ships & offshore operations.
But besides all that: I also have taste…and my opinion the Halani-1 is already stated above so I will not repeat it.
Thank you!
I WAS SIGNED-ON ON ONE OF HALANI’S VESSELS; CONTRACT WAS OF 4 MONTHS, WAS SIGNED-OFF AFTER ONE MONTH, REASON– HALANI’S POLICY. EVEN AFTER COMPLETION OF ANOTHER MONTH, MY SALARY IS STILL NOT PAID; REASON– SHORTAGE OF FUNDS…….
Saw her here in Trinidad & Tobago waters she looks very good.
the accommodation is built for dwarfs…if u are above 5ft you can’t stand upright in it….
so, ou are right if you call her Ugly\
Hey guys it was fun reading all your comments regarding her looks etc.Halani-1 has performed well so far with a few oil majors.and finally.remember”BEAUTY LIES IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER” this I feel should put all arguments to rest
Having read the comments and after careful examination of the vessel, I am fully convinced that it is a piece of s..t!! I think Mr. Ashok needs some serious classes on ship designing. What a joke! Lol.
